The 16th C gatehouse at Hodsock Priory is one the earliest brick buildings in the County.

Bestwood Winding engine, Bestwood

The late 19th C engine house at Bestwood is the last remaining vertical winding engine in the UK. Volunteers open it to the public on certain days of year.

Foxwood Coin, Calverton

Foxwood lies on the crest of a ridge south of Calverton, within it are the earthworks of a late iron age hillfort. The site is a Scheduled Monument.

Governors House, Newark on Trent

This 15th C timber framed building was used as the headquarters of the town governor during the sieges of 1643 and 1646.

Mattersey Priory, Mattersey

Mattersey Priory was founded in 1192 and dedicated to St Helena. It was a house of Gilbertine Canons. The site is managed by English Heritage and can be accessed via a bridleway.

Newstead Abbey Park, Newstead

Newstead Abbey was famously the home of the Byron family. Its grounds are registered park and garden with which are a wide range of garden features dating back to the 16th C. It even contains a cannon fort!

Old Ox Camp, Oxton

This well preserved multivallate iron age hillfort lies to the south of Oxton. Its double bank and ditch can be seen in the remaining earthworks.

Creswell Crags, Holbeck

The dramatic gorge at Creswell Crags on the Nottinghamshire Derbyshire border is a site with great palaeolithic and prehistoric significance. Its caves contain rare examples of Ice Age rock art.

Medieval Wall Paintings, Saracen’s Head, Southwell

Rediscovered in the 1990s the wall paintings at the Saracens Head date to the late 15th century.

Nottinghamshire is a county with a fascinating, varied history with a rich and diverse legacy of heritage sites, earthworks, historic buildings and archaeological finds.

Information on the above is held on the Nottinghamshire Historic Environment Record (HER). The HER includes sites dating from the Palaeolithic through to the 20th Century. There are currently over 25,000 data entries in the Nottinghamshire HER. They refer to features ranging in size from single chance finds, such as Roman coins, to large sites such as WWII airfields. The HER contains records of designated heritage assets such as Listed Buildings, Scheduled Monuments and Registered Parks and Gardens, as well as undesignated ones such as other historic buildings and structures, archaeological sites and finds of all types, and historic landscapes.

Using the search tools and mapping window on this site you will now be able to explore our records detailing the area’s rich heritage. Linked to these records are a range of sources including reports of surveys and excavations, plans, publications and a collection of air and ground photographs. The HER is a dynamic resource and new information is added to the record all the time, we aim to make more of this available in the future.
